There are many ways to steam food, but nothing gets the job done like a bamboo steamer. Using a bamboo steamer you can steam just about anything while allowing the foods to maintain their flavor, and shape.

What is a Bamboo Steamer?

A bamboo steamer is a set of interlocking baskets crafted using bamboo. These baskets sit on top of each other and finish with a lid on the top. Set on top of a wok or pot of boiling water, allowing the foods to cook using steam from the water. While the process sounds hard, it is one of the easiest and quickest ways to steam cook food.

Asians use bamboo steamers for almost anything you can think of from roasting to baking. It is not reserved for dumplings or buns alone, it steams rice, vegetables, cakes, proteins, and a whole range of foods for you to enjoy.

What makes the bamboo steamer so special is its ability to add moisture back into food. This is not just a great way to cook food, but an amazing way to reheat food. When you reheat food in the microwave it can dry out, and deteriorate its flavors. Whereas a bamboo steamer allows the food to maintain its taste, refresh itself.

How To Use A Bamboo Steamer

  1. Fill Your Wok With Water – The best place to secure your bamboo steamer is a wok. As its depth offers water a place to boil, while your bamboo steamer sits on its edges. Additionally, it holds a great deal of water, allowing you to cook for a longer period of time. Fill the wok with enough water that it just touches just a quarter of an inch to half an inch of its rim.

  1. Lining The Steamer – The second step is to line your bamboo steamer with, making sure it does not stick to the base. You can use anything from parchment paper, baking paper, to lettuce leaves, or cabbage leaves. When you use parchment paper or baking paper, cut them in a round shape and make holes for the steam to pass through. However, when steaming marinated meats or vegetables use a heatproof bowl or plate.

  1. Place Food in Layers – A bamboo steamer comes with at least 2 layers, so you can easily steam more than one type of food at a time. Make sure you do not overcrowd your steamer, as it needs to pass through to ensure exceptional cooking. Once set, set the bamboo steamer and place it in your wok.

Once the food is cooked you must wash the steamer with mild dishwashing liquid and sponge. We suggest you rinse it immediately to ensure nothing is left behind. Set it on a rack and let it dry off completely before you put it away. It might take some time, but storing a wet bamboo steamer can cause mold or mildew. So its best to let it air dry in its own time.
